Ancient origins
Tòsina has very ancient origins, reaching back to the Etruscan period. It lies along the ridge between Monte Falterona and Monte Giovi, in an area that held places of worship thousands of years old, at almost a thousand metres above sea level.
The Church of Santa Margherita
The church of Santa Margherita stands on the northern slope of Monte della Consuma, overlooking the Rufina valley. The first documentary record of the church dates to 1038, though the area shows signs of much earlier habitation, possibly Etruscan.
The Camaldolese monks
Between the 11th and 12th centuries, local families and the Camaldolese order disputed control of the church. In 1186 Santa Margherita was officially entrusted to the monks of Camaldoli, beginning a period of tension with the locals and the clergy of Pomino over rights and autonomy that continued throughout the 13th century.
The dispute was settled in 1282 with an agreement: the prior of Camaldoli appointed the rector with the consent of the local patrons. A convent with a cloister was attached to the complex, later altered over the centuries with capitals from the 16th to the 18th century.
Despite alterations and restorations that changed its original appearance, the complex remains an important testimony to the Camaldolese presence and to the medieval life of this territory.
